The big picture: There were two more mass shootings on Easter weekend, but this was the only one in which casualties were confirmed.
The first shooting, in the South Carolina capital, Columbia, left 14 people injured at a mall on Saturday, police said. Authorities in SC said they were also investigating a shooting at a bar and lounge in Furman early Sunday that left at least nine people injured, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Department.
What happened: The Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety confirmed the deaths in East Allegheny and that several people “escaped the fire” via a Twitter post on Easter Sunday morning. “An 11th victim of the shooting associated with this incident appeared at a local hospital, the condition is unknown,” he said in a later tweet.
“The initial investigation revealed that a large party was taking place on the short-term rental property, with 200 people in attendance, many of them minors,” the Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety said Sunday morning. “Up to 50 bullets were fired indoors, forcing some attendees to jump out of windows, sustaining injuries such as broken bones and wounds. Several more shots were heard outside the house.” Airbnb said the house was rented through the company and is working with authorities, the AP reports. The booking person, who was required to be over 18 years old according to Airbnb rules, is banned for life.
Authorities in Colombia, meanwhile, have confirmed that law enforcement officials did not believe the shooting at the mall was “accidental” and that they had arrested a suspect, according to the AP. “We believe they knew each other and something led to the shooting,” said Columbia Police Chief WH Skip Holbrook.
The other shooting in SC was at Cara’s Lounge in Hampton County, and police said “there are no casualties at this time.”
