Durham Regional Police said emergency crews were called around 1:20 a.m. on Monday to a shooting on Harwood Avenue, south of the 401 Freeway. Staff Sgt. Tony Romano said one of the victims was in life-threatening condition, while the others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Romano added that three of the victims were men and three were women. He said when officers first arrived, five victims were located and the sixth was later located at a hospital. Det. Kristy Mackinnon, who is leading the investigation into the incident, said a barbecue advertised online was taking place at the time of the shooting. Story continues below ad “We know there were a lot of people in attendance, so we’re hoping some people who were here can give us more information to help us determine exactly what happened,” he said. Police said the shooting happened in the back of an Ajax, Ont., restaurant. Global News Police said one or more suspects fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle. There is no information on a possible motive. Mackinnon said the victims are being treated “at various hospitals across the GTA.” Medical examiners are at the scene of the shooting on Harwood Avenue and are collecting evidence.
