By Samantha Lawson Posted August 6, 2022 at 6:57 pm Homes in Mississauga and Brampton continue to be targeted by burglars, according to recent police figures. Peel Regional Police crime mapping data shows 67 break and enter incidents occurred between July 6 and August 4. The data shows that more than half of all break and enter incidents reported in the last 30 days happened at homes. 31 break and enters occurred in shops, offices, apartments, construction sites, schools and restaurants. The remaining 36 of the 67 incidents occurred in homes. This means that there is an average of at least one house broken into every day in the area. Peel police say certain properties are more likely to be targeted, such as corner lots, homes that back onto parks and other open space, and homes that do not appear to be maintained or “lived in.” “Residential burglaries are usually crimes of opportunity,” Peel police say. “Burglars typically target certain properties based on characteristics that will increase their chances of breaking in without getting caught.” Residents are advised to maintain a safe home and prevent burglaries by following these tips:
Make sure the bushes and hedges around your property are maintained to have clear sightlines to all accessible windows and doors. Keep your garage and screen doors locked, even when you’re at home. Get to know your neighbors and join forces by looking after each other’s properties. Consider installing a second locking device for your windows and any sliding doors.
