A truck and a car collided head-on, and both vehicles were “completely engulfed” in fire, state police said in a news release.
“There are seven confirmed victims at this time, one adult woman and five children from the van and one adult woman from the passenger vehicle,” the statement said.
The crash was on westbound I-90 near milepost 33.5 in McHenry County, north of Chicago and near the Wisconsin border, authorities said.
At least one additional person was airlifted to hospital with “serious injuries”.
Police will provide an update “as soon as more information becomes available,” the statement said.
