The St. John’s Regional Fire Department has made the decision to continue the fire ban currently in place. The ban covers St. John’s, Mount Pearl and Paradise. The ban includes backyard fires, fireplaces, charcoal barbecues and open fires. Barbecues and propane stoves are allowed. The ban will remain in effect until further notice. The decision was made after consultation with other fire departments in northeast Avalon, as well as the provincial government. The department says that due to high temperatures and low amounts of rainfall there is still a high concern for fire danger. Those using propane stoves and barbecues are reminded to have a hose or fire extinguisher handy and to follow the manufacturer’s requirements. The department says it is monitoring the situation and will provide updates on any changes to the ban.
