Police said the incident happened around 9 p.m. in a family residence in the area of Warden Avenue and St. Clair East, where people gathered to pay their respects to a loved one who was killed in a motorcycle crash over the weekend.
Officers said they found a man at the scene suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.
Paramedics took the man to a trauma center with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
After the shooting, many people stayed to light candles, sing and pay tribute to their friend.
“Most of these people continued the vigil for their friend,” Inspector Jeff Bungild told CP24. “There were several witnesses who were here. They all worked together to provide us with information about the investigation and help us determine who the suspect was.”
Witnesses said the suspect fled on foot after the shooting. It is unclear if the suspect was attending the vigil before the shooting.
“Whether the suspects were known to the individuals here at the party is unknown, but given the proximity and intimacy of the incident, I would expect that these individuals knew each other,” Banghild said.
No suspect description is available at this time, but Banglint said police are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
“We have no information on what this person looks like. But again, we are in the preliminary stages of our investigation,” he said. “And while we have people who have come forward and given us information, we certainly encourage anyone who witnessed this incident to contact us at the Toronto Police Service or Crimestoppers.”
