“I literally didn’t think about it. It’s a mum thing I guess,” the UCP leadership candidate said on Monday. “I just jumped in front of the bull and tried to distract him.” The incident took place during the Strathmore Stampede bull event. The event has been a tradition since 2003. On Saturday, a male participant was charged and knocked over by a bull. The animal then pushed towards the man on the ground, so Aheer jumped the fence to help. The incident was captured on video and posted on social media. MLA Leela Aheer jumps after man trampled by bull
On Saturday, a participant in the bull event at the Strathmore Stampede was charged and knocked over by a bull, so MLA Leela Aheer jumped over the fence to help. Aheer said she feared for the young man’s life and that the fence jump happened in slow motion. In the video, he is seen trying to push the bull. “It was like trying to push a car,” he said. But he’s a farm boy, and he ducked under the bull so they weren’t able to beat him,” he said. “There was no penetration from the horns, and he was actually at the cabaret that night. And the bull is all right, too.” Aheer said she grew up in rural Alberta and spent a lot of time on farms, but this was her first encounter with an angry bull. Aheer is currently running for the UCP leadership, having announced her campaign in early June. He represents the riding of Chestermere-Strathmore and was first elected in 2015.
