Several studios are currently in a bidding war to acquire the rights to Tomb Raider, TheWrap reports. And since the license doesn’t come with an obligation to keep the same cast and crew, the next Tomb Raider movie could be a total reboot that hands Lara Croft over to yet another actress. 2018’s Tomb Raider stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft and received mixed reviews that criticized his weak portrayal of the series’ titular archaeologist. As we noted in our review at the time, MGM’s Tomb Raider seems to combine elements from the 2013 game with the early 2000s film adaptations of Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie (which also didn’t receive the best reviews ). On the small screen, Netflix is still working on an animated Tomb Raider adaptation. The series, which does not yet have an official release date, will take place after the reboot of the game trilogy that ended with Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
