Here’s the deal… ADA is starring in this Netflix movie coming out in September called “Blonde,” which is an NC-17 depiction of some of Marilyn’s life — albeit through a super -stylized lens (based on a fictional book that explores MM’s struggles, as well as rape/abuse, etc.) They all watched. No one has seen. It’s messed up Twitter. As you can see (and hear) for yourself, there are still quite noticeable traces of Ana’s native tongue in her performance. She’s from Cuba and came to the United States as an adult… and almost all of her movies so far feature her natural accent. I know the movie isn’t out yet, but Blonde starring Ana de Armas looks amazing and the scenes give me chills, but I know you can still hear her accent…like it’s STRONG. I’m really surprised they thought she sounded like Marilyn because she literally doesn’t. it looks ? Some say that Ana not perfecting it for this Oscar-bait role is odd, especially since so many actors these days (international and not) keep giving crossover roles, often to rave reviews and much fanfare. Plus, Ana said early on that she did 9 months of professional dialect training for the part — but now, few people are wondering what she has to show for it. People complaining about Ana de Armas’ Spanish accent in the BLONDE trailer…is one reason non-English speaking actors can’t make it in Hollywood. Some say there are plenty of examples of American actors butchering foreign accents, but no one minds. There are also some who feel that the accent isn’t make or break — arguing that it shouldn’t be the only thing that shakes people out of their suspension of disbelief, especially since we do it all the time for superhero movies. In other words, Film Twitter is split on this one. While that debate rages, there’s also a debate about this film potentially exploiting Marilyn’s story and legacy … all for the shock value of portraying her travails on camera, which many see as gross — especially with the free reign of an NC-17 rating. There’s a lot of talk going on, but we guess we’ll have to wait and see the final product. “Blonde” premieres September 28 on Netflix.
