More than 95% of all doses given to Halton last week were booster, which means it was either a third or fourth dose. The fourth dose (second booster dose) of the vaccine is now available to anyone aged Halton 60+ and other selected groups. There were two new deaths in Oakville this week and two more in other parts of Halton. COVID-19 hospital numbers in the Region fell slightly this week, breaking almost a month of rising imports. In the most extreme case, 18 second doses were given to Halton on the same day that 2,335 boosters were given – that is, 99.24% of all doses were booster. This means that unless there is a dramatic increase in the number of young people being vaccinated, neither Oakville nor Halton will ever achieve the 90% provincial vaccination target in the entire eligible population. (Oakville is currently 86% fully vaccinated for eligible people.) With active cases rising in Ontario by more than 20% for the third consecutive week, the provincial government is considering halting the next phase of COVID-19 health protocols, including extending compulsory mask use in hospitals, Public Transportation. There are more than 36,000 active cases. Cases in Canada to date have reached 3.6 million and hospitalizations in Canada have increased by more than 1,000 people last week. The United States has more than 80 million cumulative cases, with active cases rising again in major cities and total deaths approaching one million. Since the Halton area last revised its COVID-19 data reporting site, much less information is provided daily as local case numbers decrease. Regional data no longer indicate the number of COVID-19 recoveries or active cases. Fully vaccinated travelers, regardless of nationality, no longer need a negative COVID-19 test result to enter the country. While tests are no longer required for fully vaccinated travelers (or for persons under 4 years of age), proof of vaccination is still required for all air travel, trains and cruise ships arriving within or within the country. ** Vaccine booking: The fourth dose (second booster) of the vaccine is now available to anyone in Halton aged 60 and over, as well as to all indigenous populations and household members aged 18 and over. Halton continues to book first- and second-dose vaccinations for all residents aged five and over, as well as third-dose boosters for all adults aged 18 and over. The first, second and third installments for people 12 years and older are available on a nationwide basis. All vaccines approved for use in Canada effectively protect against COVID-19 and all known variants of concern.
