A heavy police presence took over much of the Granville Street entertainment district last night. UPDATE 23:55 Vancouver police say four people suffered serious life-changing injuries in a stabbing attack at a home in the Granville Entertainment District Saturday night. VPD was called to the rental home at Granville and Smithe streets around 10:00 p.m. after a man set fire to his suite. He then allegedly attacked and stabbed four other people inside the building. Responding officers were confronted by the armed suspect when they arrived on scene and he was shot and wounded. The man was arrested and taken to hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The VPD Major Crimes Unit and the BC Independent Investigations Bureau are investigating the incident. ORIGINAL 9:25 am Police have released some details after an incident last night sent several people to hospital. Sometime around 10 p.m. on Aug. 6, police were on scene in the Granville Street entertainment district near The Roxy (932 Granville St.). For now, all the Vancouver Police Department has said about the incident is that “several people are in hospital with serious injuries, including an armed suspect who was shot by #VPD officers in the 900 block of Granville Street late last night.” , via a tweet. They note that there is no threat to public safety at this time. Details such as how many people were injured or what the suspect was armed with have not been released. Roxy’s social media accounts note that the business closed last night. “Due to an incident that occurred at a neighboring business, the Roxy will remain closed tonight,” they explained in a Tweet around 11:30 p.m., Aug. 6. “None of our staff or patrons were involved in the incident and everyone is safe. The incident did not happen inside the Roxy,” they continue to say. In other posts overnight, a chaotic scene with several police cars and other emergency vehicles on Granville Street amid crowds as the popular destination for nightclubs and late-night parties fills with crowds.
