The BC Independent Investigation Bureau has been called in to look into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man while he was in custody in Surrey at the weekend. According to police reports, the man was arrested in connection with an investigation into a domestic attack last Friday. That afternoon, the RCMP says the man was responding during regular inmates’ checks, but was found not to be responding during a cell check on Saturday afternoon. “First aid was provided immediately by the officers and the nurse working on the shift working in the cell,” the RCMP said in a press release. “Emergency health services were called and paramedics continued to provide medical assistance until the man was pronounced dead.” The IIO says it has been informed and will conduct an independent investigation to determine if police actions contributed to his death. The IIO asks anyone with relevant information about the incident to contact the Toll Line at toll free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
