Students have an “excessive sense” of Rust’s bondage
The chancellor who ruled on the case found that the students had an excessive sense of the 17th-century courtier’s involvement in the slave trade and that removing the plaque would damage the historic value of the college chapel. In her column, Ms. Alleyne argued that “what should have been a simple decision turned into a complicated court process” and said, “the church needs to develop something better than this.” Planning decisions for college chapels do not normally fall within the jurisdiction of the court, but in 2012 Jesus voluntarily entered the planning authority of the Church of England.
