The business posted on its Facebook page that it will reopen on Monday, August 1. People at the camp told FIVE EYEWITNESS NEWS what was supposed to be a fun, family weekend turned tragic. “We’ve been coming here for about 15 years as a family reunion with my mom’s side,” said Monica Anderson, camper. Anderson calls tubing the Apple River in Somerset, Wisconsin a family favorite. “We’ve been hanging out and having family time and going down to the river, having a few drinks,” he said. But the pipeline was cut short on Saturday. (KSTP-TV) Anderson and her family were floating when they saw people gathered on the shore performing CPR. Soon after, they were removed from the water. “We see CPR being done on two teams and they were bystanders,” he said. “The police then turned up and they had to go through the water because it was down and they couldn’t drive up there.” The 911 call came in around 3:45 Saturday afternoon reporting that several people had been stabbed in the Apple River, north of the Sunrise Bridge, while tubing. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. Croix arrived at the scene and found five people with stab wounds to the chest and torso. According to the report, deputies, first responders and civilians provided medical attention to the injured. All five victims were taken to local hospitals. One of the victims, a 17-year-old boy from Stillwater, later died. The other four were seriously injured but are stable, according to the sheriff’s office. With the help of witnesses, authorities found the 52-year-old suspect in the river at the tuber outlet. “The sheriff rushed by and said ‘you’ve got to get out people are getting hurt,’” said Melanie Lou, a camper. Lou was at the river with her family when the stabbing happened. She said it’s the first time they’ve spent the weekend at Apple River and it might be the last. “Doesn’t it feel safe and makes you think we’d like to go back?” Lou said.
