The 27-year-old Toronto native lifted 100kg on her first attempt in the deadlift to take the program lead before posting Commonwealth records of 128kg in the deadlift and 228kg in the all-around. Silver medalist Taiwo Liadi from Nigeria lifted 96kg in deadlift and 120kg in deadlift, losing 12kg to the Canadian. Nauru’s Maximina Uepa totaled 216kg for the bronze. Maya Laylor sets 2 Commonwealth records on her way to gold in weightlifting

The Canadian set an event record with a clean and jerk of 128kg and her total lifted to 228kg on Tuesday. Laylor also took gold in the same category at the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent. Two years before that, the Canadian won the 71kg title in Apia. Her gold medal adds a seventh top prize for Canada at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Spence took the 3rd bronze

Emma Spence of Cambridge, Ont., won her third Commonwealth Games bronze medal in the women’s balance beam event. The 19-year-old scored 5.100 on the difficulty and 7.966 on the execution to finish with a total of 13.066, 0.400 behind Australia’s Olympic gold medalist Kate McDonald. Emma Spence takes balance beam bronze for her 3rd Games medal

The Canadian’s performance on the balance beam led to her third Commonwealth Games bronze medal. Spence also won bronze in the women’s team event on Saturday and the women’s final on Sunday. The Canadian nearly added a fourth bronze medal to her list in the women’s floor exercise, finishing just 0.034 short of Australia’s Emily Whitehead’s bronze score of 13.000. Toronto’s Cassandra Lee finished just behind Spence in fifth. Felix Dolci of Laval, Que., narrowly missed the podium in the men’s vault and men’s parallel bars finals, finishing fourth in both events.

Canada’s men’s 3×3 basketball team wins bronze

Canadian 3×3 basketball teams will win four-on-four medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The able-bodied men’s team won bronze in a 13-12 win over Scotland on Tuesday. Bikramjit Gill led the Canadians with five points, while Alex Dean Johnson added four and Jordan Zaki Jensen-Whyte scored three. On Monday, Canada narrowly edged out England 13-12 in the semifinal match. The three-medal session will begin on Tuesday at 2.30pm. ET. Both 3×3 wheelchair basketball teams will take on Australia for the gold, while the men’s women will face England.
