Vaccinations for younger children before the school year will be a “double bonus”, says Dr Kerry Beal.

By Ritika Dubey The Hamilton Spectator Thu., Aug. 4, 2022timer2 minutes. reading Some Hamilton parents are relieved after being able to get their little ones vaccinated against COVID-19. Children aged between six months and five years – the last group to qualify for vaccines in the province – began qualifying to receive their first doses on July 28. “These are all parents who were desperately waiting for their children to be vaccinated,” Dr. Kerry Beal, who began administering vaccines to children in that age group on Thursday. Dr. Kerry Beal and Dr. Joe Oliver held an outdoor vaccination clinic on Saturday morning in Good Shepherd Square for under-fives. Leo Diggins, 19 months, with mom Alex, checks his bandage after his shot. Barry Gray But not all parents feel comfortable taking their infants and toddlers to vaccination centers because of the fear of exposure. Because of this, Beal, who works as chief medical officer at the Shelter Health Network, and Dr. Joe Oliver began setting up outdoor clinics for children under five, offering them vaccines in open spaces. The highly contagious subvariant of Omicron BA.5 is spreading more and more in Hamilton during the seventh wave. Because of that, the latest availability of vaccines for younger children before the school year will be a “double bonus,” Beal said. Dr. Kerry Beal and Dr. Joe Oliver held an outdoor vaccination clinic on Saturday morning in Good Shepherd Square for under-fives. Oliver gives Nora Manoilovich, 4, her shot while mom Mary holds her. Barry Gray In her opinion, parents may be more comfortable taking their children outside, and the chances of contamination in schools will hopefully also decrease. Between July 28 and August 2, over the weekend, about 250 children aged six months to under five received their first doses at Hamilton vaccine centres, the city said. There are at least 27,000 children in this age group who are eligible for COVID-19 vaccines in Hamilton. The city currently offers about 550 appointments a week for children six months to under five, but only 40 appointments were available at Hamilton’s public health clinics from July 28 to August 1, as they were closed from Saturday to Monday. Dr. Kerry Beal and Dr. Joe Oliver held an outdoor vaccination clinic on Saturday morning in Good Shepherd Square for under-fives. Oliver gives the vaccine to Adaline Diggins, 3 years old. The Hamilton Spectator About 900 appointments for children five and under have been booked at public health clinics between July 28 and August 16, the city noted. This does not include local pharmacies or primary care providers who provide vaccines. Beal noted that she and Oliver have been vaccinating about 10 to 11 children daily since Thursday. He said he expects to see a lot of activity “for the first little bit until they get their second dose.” To book an appointment, send Oliver a direct message on Twitter at @joeolivermd.
