On Friday, Rebekah Vardy lost her defamation case against Rooney after a scathing high court ruling described her as an “unreliable witness” who was likely to have deliberately destroyed potentially vital evidence. Vardy now faces a significant legal bill, reported to be around £3m, after Mrs Justice Steyn concluded she likely colluded with her agent to leak stories from Rooney’s private Instagram account to the Sun. Rooney’s lawyer, Paul Land, said on Saturday that his client’s “sole aim” was to stop the invasion of her privacy. “Coleen didn’t want that,” she told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. “She didn’t want any of this to happen. She wants no compensation, no retribution, she never wanted any of that, she just wanted the invasion of her privacy to stop and that was her only goal and her only focus. “He has no other goals, certainly no need for compensation or demands or anything like that. She’s just happy it’s over and she can get on with her life.” Lund, head of litigation at law firm Brabners, said they had tried to settle the case but as a defendant Rooney, whose husband is ex-England footballer Wayne, had “very limited options”. “You can either defend yourself or capitulate,” he added. “Coleen was not one for capitulation either, but we tried our best to see if there was any middle ground that could be found and unfortunately we didn’t succeed on that front.” He argued that according to court costs budgets, the reported figure of £3m for legal costs was “a gross overestimate”. “The figures there are a matter of record, £3m is a gross overestimate and does not represent those figures. I can’t speak to what Ms Rooney spent on the case, I can only know what I know from my side.” Subscribe to First Edition, our free daily newsletter – every morning at 7am. BST also said Vardy, whose husband is Leicester City footballer Jamie, could face “some follow-up issues” after Sun journalists were sought to join the claim. But that would be “between the Sun and Mrs Vardy to sort out”. Asked about reports of a Netflix special, Lund said he’s had several media approaches, adding, “If everybody’s telling me the truth, there’s a lot of documentaries being made.” But he said he had “certainly not been involved with any of them and it would be new to me if Coleen has been involved with any of them”. On Friday, Rooney welcomed her victory but said she “never thought she should have gone to court”. A three-year battle with Vardy ensued after Rooney had a “sting” operation to find out who was leaking stories about her. After posting the words “It’s ……… Rebekah Vardy’s account” on Instagram, she was sued for defamation by Vardy, who denied passing on information to the Sun.
