Miguel Angel Abrego Hurtado, 49, and Concepcion Leticia Carrillo Arellando, 48, of Coon Rapids, Minn, were shot dead on April 7. Mexican news network Milenio reported that a group of gunmen on motorcycles seized the truck used by the couple and opened fire, killing them. A pair of Coon Rapids were fatally shot in Puerto Escondido, Mexico on April 7.
The Oaxaca Attorney General’s Office wrote on Twitter that detectives were investigating the case. According to the family, the couple lives on the parents, siblings and two children – a 21-year-old son in college and an 18-year-old daughter who is finishing high school. The son and daughter are now facing the cost of transporting their parents’s bodies back to Minnesota, funeral expenses and home mortgage payments, according to a family-run GoFundMe page description. Coon Rapids City Council member Pablo Hernandez Jr. shared a link on his Facebook page about the fundraiser. “What a heartbreaking situation for a Coon Rapids family right now λώ Please let us know and let us try to gather their children who are left to pick up the pieces and absorb such an impact with an unexpected financial burden,” he wrote. Yazmin Carrillo, Leticia Carrillo’s niece, remembers the couple as hardworking and compassionate. He said they had a cleaning business together and rarely took breaks, working as hard as they could to support their family, but still had time to participate in their children’s school activities. “My aunt and uncle were very hardworking people. They really tried to work as hard as they could to take care of their two children … their children were their life,” he said. Miguel Abrego Hurtado and Concepcion Leticia Carrillo Arellano. They were both in danger and she said that her uncle was struggling with his health, but they succeeded. “I am grateful that at that time they were able to continue to move forward and really undertake to promote the people who are being vaccinated,” he said. Shortly afterwards, the couple began volunteering at vaccine clinics at La Bendición Covenant Church in Brooklyn Park, urging other church members to get vaccinated and distribute kits to people after the vaccine was given. They regularly hosted barbecues for their extended family, where they played upbeat salsa music and grilled carne asada – marinated pork or steak with corn on the cob. Miguel would be the “grill”, he said, but Leticia would also help. They are still young. They are still in school. And I can not imagine being in their shoes. “Right now, they are navigating life without their parents. So if we can help them financially, that means we can take some weight off their shoulders,” he said.
Ann Osterhus, who donated to the fundraiser, said she was a customer of Miguel and Leticia’s house cleaning service. When Osterhus’s husband was ill, he needed help to get home and hired Leticia as a cleaner. “She was there for me when I needed her, and I was there for her when she needed me, and we became friends right away,” Osterhus said. Then Osterhus started referring her friends to the couple’s cleaning service. “Everyone would say their lives were better because they met Leticia and Miguel,” he said. Andrea Northwood, another friend of the couple, also made a donation. “They were absolutely beautiful, caring, wonderful people and we are just sick and sad about the loss of both their children,” he said.
