Thanks for your company. see you tomorrow for more football. It’s back! “Not bad for an opening match,” says Mary Waltz. “Both teams had their moments, the match wasn’t over until the 85th minute. Reasonably tense.” Agreed. It wasn’t quite Sheffield Wednesday 2-3 Big Ron’s Aston Villa, but it was a decent start. Arsenal were impressive, especially in defence. Many good teams will not win at Selhurst Park this season.

Final: Crystal Palace 0-2 Arsenal

Arsenal kick off their Premier League season with a solid win at Selhurst Park. Gabriel Martinelli’s 20th-minute header was a fitting reward for an explosive start in which Gabriel Jesus caught the eye. Arsenal had to work much harder in the second half – another debutant, centre-half William Saliba, was superb – before Mark Gwehi’s late own goal gave them a two-goal cushion. They look nice, pretty good. Full time and it’s three points for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. Photo: Ian Walton/AP Updated at 21.57 BST 90+3 mins Substitution for Arsenal – Albert Sabbi replaces Martin Odegaard. 90 minutes Three minutes of added time. The second goal dropped the stuffing from Palace. 87 minute shot by Saka with Gwehi and it went behind. Palace made a double change – Will Hughes and Malcolm Ebiowei for Eze and someone else, I think Ayew. So much for Arsenal settling for 1-0. They worked the ball well from left to right where Saka ran into Mitchell who backpedaled just inside the area. He turned the ball onto his right foot and hammered home a cross that Guehi headed into his own net at the near post. It was a really difficult ball to defend. Updated 22.02 BST

TARGET! Crystal Palace 0-2 Arsenal (Guehi own goal 85)

It’s all over now! Marc Guehi heads into his own net to make sure of the points for Arsenal. Both were impressive. 82 min Eze crosses right on the edge of the Arsenal area. Zaha collects the loose ball, gets to the byline and has a cutback booted clear. 81 min A wild cross from Zaha, Palace’s best player, flashes into the Arsenal area. Clyne retrieves it on the far side and puts it back into the middle. Xhaka has a clear head. 81 mins Arsenal seem to have settled for 1-0 and to be fair they are defending quite comfortably. Saliba and Gabriel look very solid in the center of their defence. William Saliba was outstanding on his Premier League debut for Arsenal. Photo: Adam Davy/PA Updated at 21.43 BST 80 min “No, Xhaka is the most mispronounced name in the Premier League,” says Per Horfelt. “He is of Albanian descent and pronounced ‘Jaka’ there. Ask my wife, she’s Albanian.” Updated at 21.51 BST 79 minutes foul by Eze with a header by Andersen and hacked by Gabriel. 76 mins “Anything can change and anything is possible,” says Yash Gupta, “but as expected this Arsenal team doesn’t look threatening.” That’s a bit harsh, though they’ve certainly faded since that explosive beginning. Updated at 21.34 BST 75 minutes New change for Palace. Luka Milivojevic replaces the tiring Ducouret in midfield. 74 min Doucoure is cramping. which allows all other players to have a drink. 73 min “Roberto Firmino on an absolute country mile,” says my colleague John Windmill, answering Joe Johnson’s question after 68 minutes. “Firminho or even Firminho. It’s driving me (and by extension, my wife) up the wall.” 72′ Zaha cuts in from the left and White’s shot is blocked. 72 mins This is Eze’s chance at the start of the second half. The pass from Zaha, a sudden thrust of the dagger, was delicious. 71 min Andersen played some magnificent passes tonight, particularly to Zaha on the left. 70 min White makes a wonderful pass inside Mitchell to find Saka. He moves into the area but Mitchell recovers well and eventually Saka sprays high and wide from a very tight angle. A peaceful evening in South London. Photo: Julian Finney/Getty Images Updated at 21.32 BST 68 mins “Hey Rob,” says Joe Johnson. “The beginning of a new season, the mind relaxed, the longing excited. I was reliably informed by a Norwegian friend that Ødegaard should be pronounced ‘Erdegord’. I wonder: which Premier League footballer is most mispronounced?’ I have no idea, but I remember when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a shot in the Manchester United goal, and the (usually) great ITV commentator Brian Moore shouted “Down!” What made it even more impressive is that Paul Scholes was not on the pitch at the time. 66 minutes Sloop collected a loose ball, entered the area and Partey’s shot was blocked. If Arsenal don’t win this game they will mourn a slightly passive second half performance. 64 min For half an hour it looked like Arsenal were going to get away with it. it’s been a very even game since then. Meanwhile, Clyne is penalized for a foul on Martinelli. 62 min A Palace corner leads to a scramble in the area, with Ramsdale saving a shin from his own player Gabriel. It wouldn’t count because Anthony Taylor had blown something or other. 60 mins White is booked for a foul on the increasingly influential Zaha. Ben White enters the book. Photo: Micah Crook/Shutterstock Updated at 21.24 BST 59 minute: Chance for Odegard! Jesus steals the ball from the ragged Guehi and shoots into the gap on the right. He squared it up with Odegaard just inside the area, but Odegaard inexplicably tries to find Martinelli when he should have gone for a goal himself. The ball is deflected to Jesus in an offside position and he has a shot blocked by Andersen. Jesus’ shot wouldn’t count. Odegard would, if he only had one. Updated at 21.18 BST 58 min The first of many, many, many, many changes in this Premier League season: Jean-Philippe Mateta replaces the disappointing Odsonne Edouard up front for Palace. 56 mins Odegaard hits it over the wall and a few yards wide of the near post. Decent effort. 55 mins Mitchell fouls Saka 22 yards from goal, fair to the right of centre. Odegard might love this… 53′ Zaha’s cross hits White and hits his hand. No penalty. Zaha takes the ball, beats White inside the area and is tackled emphatically by Saliba. He makes an excellent debut. And Zaha, after a slow start, seems to want it.
