A dolphin was found dead on a Florida beach on March 24 after being nailed to the head. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has received reports for the first time of a dead dolphin on Fort Myers Beach. It was then recovered by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC). The dolphin is suspected of being in a begging position when it died – a place that is not natural for dolphins other than when they are feeding illegally – according to a NOAA statement. An autopsy performed on the dolphin revealed that it had been nailed by a “spear object” over its right eye while it was alive, according to the statement. At least 27 dolphins have been “shot with guns or arrows, or trapped with sharp objects” since 2002, according to NOAA. 100 YEAR OLD DEAD SHARK HAD MENINGITIS, RESEARCHERS SAY The Marine Mammal Conservation Act prohibits any “harassment, hunting, capture, collection or killing” of dolphins, according to NOAA. Anyone who violates the act can face fines of up to $ 100,000 and up to one year in prison.
