It was a fun night. Philly are you serious?? This was practice! 30k plus here in training! Nah, I like it here already. Today was fun. Only the beginning 🔥 — AJ Brown (@1kalwaysopen_) August 8, 2022 Despite a warm night, the Eagles nearly filled Lincoln Financial Field’s lower bowl Sunday night for their only public practice of training camp. The Eagles have a walkthrough on Monday and will return to practice on Tuesday. For comments:
- Not even the public doctor’s office will move a household. Structure is important: • You know it’s getting deeper and deeper into training camp when the injury report continues to rise. The Eagles were already without Jordan Mailata (concussion) and Andre Dillard (concussion) and now have added Le’Raven Clark (hamstring) to the list. That means they landed their fourth left tackle (Kayode Awosika) on Sunday night. More on that in a moment. But the Eagles also brought back tackle Jared Williams for obvious reasons. UDFA was with them not long ago. The roster is full at 91. • Javon Hargrave also joined the injury report with a groin injury. The other players who did not practice Sunday: Grant Calcaterra (hip), DeVonta Smith (groin), Jimmy Moreland (ankle), Boston Scott (concussion), Jaquiski Tartt (personal reasons), Kary Vincent (groin), Greg Ward (toe). • During practice, it appeared that JJ Arcega-Whitside suffered an arm/shoulder injury. It wasn’t long after an impressive dive. Something to watch.
- The highlight of Sunday’s practice was a deep ball from Hurts to AJ Brown. Hurts threw it in the bucket despite tight coverage by James Bradberry for a 30-yard touchdown. Hurts has been hitting on Brown a lot throughout training camp, and that hasn’t changed under the lights at the Linc.
- Hurts also showed off his legs on Sunday night. That part of his game isn’t always on display in practice, but it was in this session. On one particular drive, Hurts had four runs, including one that left Brandon Graham caught in the air. It was eerily reminiscent of the big juke against the Saints last season. This is the second such run I can remember from Hurts this summer.
- The Eagles were down their fourth left tackle Sunday and it showed. Josh Sweat feasted on Awosika early in practice. This had the potential to completely derail the attack. Ultimately, Sweat was benched in favor of Derek Barnett. This may have been out of mercy.
- Speedy running back Jason Huntley is starting to have good days. Without Scott (concussion) Huntley is getting more reps and making the most of them. He snapped a 50+ streak on the left side. Huntley has been impressing me with his toughness the last two days, looking for contact, but what always stands out about him is that burst. This appeared Linc.
- TJ Edwards makes a big play every practice. In the final period of this practice, he almost had a dive on a pass from Hurts in the middle of the field. If he could secure it, this pick would be the play of the day. However, a diving PBU earns a mention.
- Noah Togiai (favorite on the Eagle Eye podcast) had some notable hits Sunday from Gardner Minshew and Reid Sinnett. Without Calcaterra and now possibly without JJAW, Togiai can show his skills. He’s still a long shot to make the roster, but he may remain on the practice squad.
- Another long shot to make the team is Deon Cain. But the receiver, who wears No. 85, has caught a ton of passes during this camp. Again, probably not a spot for him on the roster, but he’s making a strong push.
- Taron Jackson had some flash plays on Sunday. The sophomore defensive end had two first-team reps as the defense rotated and made them count. He should be the fourth DE on the roster.
- In the middle of practice, Sinnett ended up taking second-team reps during one period. Minshew didn’t appear injured and took second-team reps later in the night, but Sinnett got his first second-team reps of the summer. Sinnett is clearly ahead of rookie Carson Strong for the third QB spot. Stupid remark of the night: During the early period of practice, Hurts and Brown threw a football into the stands at the fans. So two lucky Eagles fans left the Linc with a nice souvenir. Subscribe to the Eagle Eye podcast Apple Podcasts | Google Play | Spotify | Tailor | Art19 | Watch on YouTube
