Earlier this afternoon, April 14, the busy Edinburgh Bypass closed to the west and east of Baberton after a trailer caught fire near the Calder Crossing as dramatic images of the fire surfaced. Scenes from the scene showed huge clouds of black smoke rising in the air, with Scottish police warning even nearby residents of Wester Hailes and Sighthill to close their windows. Traffic Scotland, which monitors delays and incidents across the country, posts live updates on Twitter to alert motorists who may be in the area, the latter arriving at 5:30 p.m., informing travelers about possible delay of 80 minutes. They posted on Twitter: “UPDATE: A720 Westbound – Baberton closed, travel time about 80 minutes from Gilmerton. Huge queues have been spotted all the way to Dregorn as traffic heads down the slippery Baberton Road (Image: Traffic Scotland) “The eastbound route has reopened completely. The westbound freeway remains closed on the bypass. Avoid, as there are long delays.” The tweet was met with responses from several motorists who waited for hours due to queues, as uncertainty about the exact duration of the delays continues. One user said: “We’ve been stuck on this for five hours now. These repeated identical updates are not acceptable. What is actually being done to clear the way? Are vulnerable people being cared for in vehicles?” Receive all the latest news and headlines from Edinburgh, Fife and Lothians sent directly to your inbox twice a day, subscribe to our free newsletter.
