Tyler Benson signed a one-year, two-way deal. He gets $750,000 in the NHL. He has a $275,000 AHL salary with $350,000 guaranteed. #Oilers #Condors — Jason Gregor (@JasonGregor) August 6, 2022 Since being selected with the 32nd overall pick in the 2016 Entry Draft, Tyler Benson has managed to become a top player for the Bakersfield Condors, but he has yet to solidify his spot on an NHL roster. Could 2022-23 finally be his year? Not only has Benson been on the scoreboard at the AHL level — he finished in the top 3 in the league in scoring in 2021 — but he’s also found himself playing in all situations as he continues to work whatever angle will land him in the NHL. After making his Edmonton Oilers debut in the 2019-20 season — playing in just seven games that year, recording one assist — Benson got his best shot with the big team last year after appearing in 29 games and scoring his first goals in the NHL. Ultimately, Benson returned to the Condors to finish out their year, but perhaps this first real taste of NHL action was the push he needed. If Benson is going to land a job with the Oilers in 2022-23, it goes without saying that he’s going to need a strong training and conditioning camp, and even that could be a long one. While there’s no doubt in my mind Benson has the hands and processor to play at the highest level, this is about as stacked as the Oilers have been up front for as long as I can remember, and it will take a miraculous effort from the former second round. to jump someone ahead of him on the depth chart. That doesn’t mean he can’t do it, just that it will be incredibly difficult. That being said, we always have some interesting stories in training camp and maybe this is Benny’s year? Either way, locking up Benson gives the Oilers a proven player at the AHL level who will help the Condors contend while also providing a reasonable dose of depth for the big group in case of injury.
