Ottawa police are investigating what they called the murder of an elderly man at a Smyth Street home. A statement from the Ottawa Police Department said Friday night that the man was found dead at his home in Smyth, east of East Ontario Children’s Hospital and between the Haig and Saunderson vehicles at about 3 p.m. An unknown person was taken into custody, police added. No further details were immediately available.

An Ottawa man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of an elderly man in a Smyth Street home. Phillippe Hebert, 69, from Ottawa, appeared in court Saturday morning and was remanded in custody. Ottawa police were called to a home on Smyth Road, between Haig and Saunderson Streets, at about 3 a.m. Friday. Investigators remained at the scene on Saturday. The victim was identified as 87-year-old Richard Rasford, from Ottawa.
