England has done it. The Lionesses defeated Germany 2-1 after extra time in the Euro 2022 final on Sunday to claim their first major title in front of a record 87,192 home crowd. Striker Ella Toone opened the scoring in the 62nd minute with a beautiful chip finish, but her effort was canceled out by Germany’s Lina Magull, who equalized from close range 17 minutes later. The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and the two sides could not be separated until the 110th minute when England substitute Chloe Kelly reacted quicker to a loose ball from a corner to hit the winner. England held on confidently for the final 10 minutes of the game and a wave of euphoric ecstasy and relief swept around Wembley – and the nation – as the magnitude of what they had just achieved hit home. The Lionesses ended England’s 56-year wait for a major trophy and sparked celebrations that, no doubt, lasted well into the night. ‘Three Lions’ and ‘Sweet Caroline’ – the Lionesses’ adopted anthem – blared from Wembley’s loudspeakers as Euro 2022 heroines Leah Williamson, Beth Mead, Chloe Kelly and the rest cheered and danced across the hallowed turf before they receive theirs. winners’ medals and removal of the trophy. England will collect the trophy in a victory parade on Monday – although it’s not so much a parade as a party as the players celebrate with thousands of fans in Trafalgar Square. Alexandra Pope missed the final due to injury
Think Germany striker Alexandra Popp. This was supposed to be her date with destiny after injury ruled her out of the 2013 and 2017 editions of the tournament. The 31-year-old was Germany’s star, just months after returning from nearly a year out with injury in knee, and her six goals meant it was a tie between her and Beth Mead for the Golden Boot. But in a cruel twist, Popp suffered even more injury as she suffered a muscle problem in the warm-up and had to be substituted. In an injury-plagued career, this was perhaps the most painful yet. England winning Euro 2022 isn’t the end – it’s just the beginning
Here’s our correspondent Mark Critchley, from Wembley, on what’s next: The morning after the historic night before, it’s worth checking out the Football Association’s eight-point Women’s & Girls’ Football Strategy, 2020-2024: Inspiring Positive Change, with particular attention to point six. “England: win an international,” he writes. Well, there you go. Job done. Two whole years earlier too. Except that no work has actually been done. Far from it. And you could say as much at Wembley too.

England’s glory will ‘turbo-charge’ the women’s game
Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham insists England’s success at Euro 2022 will “recharge” the women’s game in this country. Chloe Kelly’s extra-time goal sealed a 2-1 victory as the Lionesses won their first major trophy in their history and the first for an England senior side since the 1966 World Cup triumph over West Germany. “The last few years have been incredible. We have invested so much and the Lionesses have taken their opportunity and created something incredible. It’s been an amazing month and an amazing day yesterday,” Bullingham told BBC Breakfast. “I think it’s going to really turbocharge everything we’ve done in the women’s game. “There’s no reason we can’t have the same number of girls playing as boys and it will inspire a whole new generation of players.” Bullingham continued: “We’ve worked incredibly hard to create lots of new opportunities for girls and make sure clubs and schools embrace opportunities and schools use football in the curriculum and to see it as normal for girls to play football as boys do. “We’ve been preparing for this moment for years. We have clubs across the country ready to accept girls, we’ve invested in schools, we’ve created opportunities for girls to come forward and we’re ready and willing to do it.” England Germany Euro 2022 Women’s Soccer (Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. England players crash Sarina Wiegman’s press conference
England coach Sarina Wiegman’s press conference after winning the European Women’s Championship on Sunday was interrupted by her celebrating players, who danced around the room to a rendition of the “Three Lionesses” anthem. Wiegman had just finished answering a question about tactics and where the game was won and lost when the players made their surprise entrance, goalkeeper Mary Earps jumping onto the table and joined by defender Lucy Bronze . “We haven’t sung it at all, that’s something from English culture,” Dutch Wiegman told reporters after the break. “I think we won the Cup. I don’t think this is the home of the Cup, this is in Switzerland somewhere with UEFA, but we won it and we are very happy.” The song “Three Lions” by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner and the band The Lightning Seeds was originally written for the Euro ’96 men’s tournament hosted by England, and has since been rewritten for the women’s team. Baddiel retweeted a clip of the England players celebrating, writing: “This makes me so proud. Thanks again Lionesses.” ‘It’s come home’: Singing Lionesses gatecrash post-match press conference Lawrence Ostlere1 August 2022 08:01 1659337089
