GOAL! Everton 0-1 Chelsea (Jorginho 45p)

Penalty for Chelsea!!!

45+7 mins: Abdoulaye Doucoure pushes Ben Chilwell to the ground using both hands, prompting Craig Pawson to point. Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure fouls Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell, leading to a penalty. Everton finally got their lines straight. 45+3 mins: Mikolenko heads the ball wide in Chelsea’s 11th corner. It’s first down the left and Ben Chilwell sends the ball into the mixer. Breaks to Rhys James, whose shot goes wide for… you guessed it – a corner. 45+1 min: We’re heading into added time and there will be at least eight minutes after this long injury time for Ben Godfrey, who was taken off on a stretcher earlier with a serious ankle injury. 43 min: Raheem Sterling gets the ball into the net for Chelsea but his effort is ruled out for offside. It’s good news for Everton in general and Jordan Pickford in particular – England’s best had an N’Golo Kante shot in Sterling’s path. 41 min: Everton attack on the break and Demarai Gray tries to pick out Anthony Gordon in acres of space. Cool as a cucumber, despite being the only defender behind, Thiago Silva sticks out a leg to intercept the pass. 40 mins: Mason Mount’s cross into the Everton penalty area is cleared by Mason Holgate, who has been busy since coming on for Ben Godfrey. 38 mins: Anthony Gordon pulls the ball back off the line in an attempt to tee up Doucoure, but Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva combine to clear it before he can unleash a shot from seven or eight yards. 35 mins: Kalidou Koulibaly is very unlucky to escape a booking after grabbing a fist from Anthony Gordon’s shirt and dragging the youngster to the ground as he tried to get away from it. He is penalized by Craig Pawson, who keeps the yellow card in his pocket. 32 min: Gerry Mina slides in to block Kai Havertz’s attempt to square the ball across the Everton goal. Corner for Chelsea. From this they win another, then another, with Holgate clearing the ball twice in quick succession. In the third instance, it’s Nathan Patterson who clearly leads the inswinger. 30 mins: Alex Iwobi is penalized for bringing down Raheem Sterling by pushing the Chelsea striker in the back. Free kick for Chelsea, almost in line with the right edge of the penalty area. Nothing comes of it as Everton are clear. Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling reacts after hitting the deck following a challenge from Everton’s Alexander Iwobi. Photo: Jon Super/AP Updated at 18.26 BST 28 min: Mykolenko’s cross from the left finds the head of Anthony Gordon but the Everton No10 leans back and can’t turn his header near the Chelsea goal. 27 min: Kai Havertz is sent off after a run down the right wing before he can cross to Raheem Sterling, who is waiting in the middle. 25 mins: A Doucoure headed chance before that Tarkowski effort means Everton have the better of it, but the deadlock remains deadlocked. For now, he has a corner for Chelsea to defend. They do it with minimal fuss. 22 mins: Demarai Gray wins a corner for Everton and James Tarkowski brings a smart save from Edward Mendy with a firm header, forcing the Chelsea keeper to turn the ball over the bar. 20 mins: Koulibaly gets a great touch on Demarai Gray’s cross to keep the ball out into the path of Dwight McNeill who was lurking behind him. In front of Koulibaly, Anthony Gordon jumped higher but failed to catch the ball. 19 min: From that corner, Chelsea won another and then a third in quick succession. The ball breaks to Mason Mount on the edge of the box and his low drive is saved by Pickford diving low to his right. The ball went wide, but the Everton keeper was taking no chances. 17 min: Ben Godfrey is carried off the stretcher to more applause from the Everton fans. Mason Holgate comes on and has a corner to defend. Turns out Pickford didn’t stop the ball from going over the line after all. 15 mins: A minute’s applause for a young Everton fan called Izzy O’Connor who recently died aged 15. May he rest in peace. 15 mins: The break in play continues as Godfrey continues to receive treatment from the Everton goal. 13 mins: Injured trying to clear up a defensive mess of his own making, the hapless Ben Godfrey is given oxygen and about to be stretchered off with what looks like a serious ankle injury. Hopefully it’s not too bad and he’ll have a speedy recovery as possible. 11 mins: Ben Godfrey appears to have been badly injured in this clash and is currently receiving treatment. Mason Holgate begins his warm-up. 10mins: Jordan Pickford sprints back to prevent Ben Godfrey’s unmarked full-back from going out for a corner. Hacks the ball clear, but only as far as Havertz, who heads the ball into the side netting, colliding with Pickford and the retreating Godfrey. Updated at 18.24 BST 9 mins: Chelsea enjoy a spell of sustained possession which ends abruptly when Nathan Patterson gets past Kai Havertz and steals possession in Everton’s left-back area. 7 mins: Nothing much to report in these early stages as the teams need time to shape each other up. 5 mins: Correction: the stripes on Chelsea’s away kit are not ‘light blue’ they are – consult notes – ‘frozen lion’. Do lions have stripes? I always thought it was more of a zebra thing. The “frozen lion” adorns Raheem Sterling’s torso. Photo: Toby Melville/Reuters Updated at 17.56 BST 3 mins: Abdoulaye Doucoure gets his head on a cross into the Chelsea penalty area from the right but can’t direct his feeble effort towards goal. Edouard Mendy kicks the ball out. 2 mins: Everton go ahead and Vitaly Mikolenko takes the ball down the left touchline but can’t clear the cross. It plays backwards.

In the Sky Sports studio, former Everton striker Duncan Ferguson confidently tips his old club to take all three points. “Chelsea don’t win at Goodison,” he declares. Thomas Tuchel speaks: “It helps to have the big day so the focus is fully on Everton,” he says of his side’s preparations. “That helped us calm down, calm down doing hard work and focus. Asked what Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly bring to Chelsea, he said “personality and quality”. He adds that the duo “have proven it for big clubs, Raheem has proven it in the Premier League time and time again.” Frank Lampard speaks: “The fans have helped – they’re here again before the game, we can’t expect it every time but it’s great to see,” he tells Sky Sports. “We ended up in a difficult position last season and we don’t want to be there again, but one thing we know is that Everton have to be a team and a club that competes on the pitch in the right way.” These teams: There are four debutants in the starting line-up, with James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeill starting for Everton, while Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling make their first official starts for Chelsea. Signed from Rangers last season, Nathan Patterson lines up at right wing-back for Everton in what is only his second start for the club after undergoing ankle surgery shortly after his arrival. Ben Chilwell is back for Chelsea after a long spell on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.
