HANCOCK COUNTY, Ga. — A middle-class Georgia family is mourning the loss of a woman who died earlier this month when investigators say she fell from the back seat of a Hancock County sheriff’s vehicle. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into how Brianna Grier allegedly fell from the back seat of the moving patrol car. The family is now asking for answers. “No one believes what the sheriff’s department says. It doesn’t add up,” attorney Ben Crump said. The incident occurred on July 15 when Grier had a psychotic episode. Instead of being taken to the hospital, he was arrested. “When she had her episodes, we tried to get her help. They usually took her to the hospital,” said father Marvin Grier. During a press conference Friday, attorneys announced that questions are now being raised about the circumstances of her arrest and the moments after she got into the back seat of the patrol car. FILM STORIES: “Those officers would have heard some sort of alert, which would have told them the door wasn’t closed properly,” Crump said. GBI investigators determined that Grier fell out of the patrol car because the door was not properly closed. Grier was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with a brain injury. He died six days later. “I loved Brianna and I will do everything I can to bring her justice,” said mother Mary Grier. The family is now asking for an independent autopsy. Meanwhile, GBI investigators say this investigation is far from over. RELATED VIDEO: New video released following GBI investigation into Hancock woman’s death ©2022 Cox Media Group
