Florida’s attorney general, who has been suspended by Republican Gov. Ron DeSandis for refusing to charge abortion doctors or patients with illegal terminations, is vowing to mount a “vigorous defense” in court. DeSantis suspended Andrew Warren, a Democratic attorney, on Aug. 4 during a news conference where he said the attorney general failed to enforce properly passed laws that crack down on child sex-reassignment surgery and some abortion procedures. “We had the person here from Hillsborough County say and [sign] letters that there are certain laws that he just won’t enforce and he won’t prosecute,” DeSantis told Fox News.[State’s] Lawyers who put their ideology above the rule of law are not fulfilling their oath.” Without elaborating, Warren said Sunday that he would fight the suspension. I refuse to let this man trample on your freedoms, to speak your mind, to make your own health care decisions. care and to make your vote count. I hope you’ll stand by me,” Warren said. Warren was elected in 2016 and 2020. In the video, Warren said the governor is trying to overturn an election. FLORIDA GOV. His plot to suspend me blatantly violates the most fundamental basis of our democracy. Your vote. He is trying to subvert the results of a fair and free election by abusing his power to serve the his own political ambition,” he said. A news release from DeSantis’ office says he “has the authority to suspend a state official pursuant to Article IV, Section 7 of the Florida State Constitution.” After Warren was suspended, DeSantis appointed Hillsborough County Circuit Court Judge Susan Lopez as his replacement. “It is my duty to hold Florida’s elected officials to the highest standards for the people of Florida. I have the utmost confidence that Judge Susan Lopez will lead the office through this transition and faithfully uphold the rule of law,” said DeSantis in the press. release. A Florida law banning abortions after 15 weeks, with exceptions such as if an abortion is needed to save a mother’s life, cases of rape or incest, and more, went into effect on July 1.
