Rank Lampard believes Amadou Onana will have a “big impact” at Everton as a deal for the Lille midfielder approaches. The Belgium international was at Goodison Park on Sunday to watch Lampard’s side fall to a tight defeat at the hands of Chelsea, who needed a Jorginho penalty to get their Premier League campaign off to a winning start. Onana was a target for West Ham and a £29m deal was agreed with the French club, but a move was thrown into major doubt as issues emerged over wage demands. This has been something of a theme in east London this summer, as even despite the big signings of Nayef Aguerd and Gianluca Scamacca, David Moyes has watched another target in Jesse Lingard move elsewhere. West Ham will meet Lingard next week when Nottingham Forest visit the London Stadium, while a potential clash with Onana could come in September when Moyes’ side travel to Merseyside.

“I’m a big fan, that’s why he’s coming,” Lampard told Sky Sports on Saturday. “When you come in as a manager you want to influence the style of the team and he is a young player who has, for me, everything in terms of physique, quality on the ball and defensive mentality. “He’s going to have a big impact on the club and he’s a good lad with real confidence in him. I don’t want to keep him too long but I’m very happy he’s coming.”
