Yvon Buissereth was shot dead as police battled gangs in the Laboule neighborhood, following an outbreak of violence in recent weeks in Port-au-Prince and a turf war in the city of Cite Soleil that left 148 dead, injured or missing. “His killers, as well as all other criminals who bring grief to this country, will be fully prosecuted and made to account for their heinous actions in a court of law,” Prime Minister Ariel Henry tweeted. Buissereth has served as a senator since 2006 and was appointed in 2017 to head the Public Company for the Promotion of Social Housing, known as EPPLS. The organization focuses on low-income housing and over the years has partnered with foreign institutions such as the World Bank and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Haitian gangs waged intense firefights in late July in Port-au-Prince, shutting down major avenues and a municipal market in the city center. Earlier last month, fighting between rival Haitian gangs near Port-au-Prince left thousands in the small seaside town of Cite Soleil trapped without access to water, food or medical care.
