Nimco For me, as an activist fighting for young women, we don’t have a voice, so sometimes I have to limit my voice. You have to play the game. So you have to be friends with the Mike Pompeos of the world or the Boris Johnsons of the world to be able to say, ‘Are you going to promote these things?’ Gina That’s probably why you’re a more successful activist than I am, because I won’t do that. When I was struggling to expose corruption and the causes of the financial crisis, people would say to me: “You would be much more successful if you played well with the right people.” I said, “No, I’m sorry, I’ll take them all out.” I’m not that good at playing the game. Nimco I’m not going to date certain people, I’m not going to vote for them, but I’m going to work with them because they’ve been elected.

Nimco What we will disagree on is that I think Boris Johnson is a genuinely good man. But leadership shows… you know, Michelle Obama said that being president doesn’t make you a better person, it exposes the person that you are. Gina I’ve never met him. I saw him once as he was waiting to speak at the Conservative party conference. I was in the green room and I saw him messing up his hair and putting his trousers in his socks and I thought: what are you doing? Being in power is not a game. Nimco Even the false reality, the lie, I think it’s just because he never wants to upset anyone. He wants to keep the peace and you can’t as prime minister. You have to tell people if they don’t pull their socks up. Gina I’m not a fan but I don’t blame him, I blame the people who put him there because he never had any of the qualities to be prime minister and they allowed him to get that job. They are complicit. Nimco I’ve seen people be incredibly horrible to him, and the year he lost his mom. I don’t think he had much love in this life, as a child or as an adult. Gina They thought they could control him – he was going to win an election, that’s all that mattered. That’s why I find this leadership contest an insult, because they’re pretending they weren’t there and that they’re going to make things better, but look at their ballots: they could have announced it much earlier. I don’t believe the party is going to change direction. Nimco Whoever is going to win is caretaker prime minister because he will lose the next general election. Gina I believe it will be soon. In 2024, we will be in the middle of recession, inflation, cost of living, the real cost that Ukraine will start to come. Why will you hold an election that year? I think it will be soon, because the new leader will get a bounce. Nimco If there is an election I don’t think Boris Johnson will stand. Or he will ask to be transferred to a safe constituency. Gina I’m surprised – I would have thought experience would mean she wouldn’t want to. Nimco He’ll think there’s a kid back in there. He’s been sounding like Donald Trump for the past few days. Gina We don’t have a first lady in this country – we elect the prime minister and their wife is supposed to be out of the way. I get the impression that Carrie has meddled in politics, and that’s wrong. Nimco They gave her a hard time, but then I think she’s also meddled a little too much.
Sharing a plate
Gina You can’t move forward in the world when you’re holding half of it back. We haven’t even begun to create gender equality. Nimco Now it’s the last two Tory candidates, I’m going to write a wish list of what women need. I want the equals section to be a real section. Then we should look at universal child care as an infrastructure… Gina Absolutely, it’s ridiculous. Childcare in the UK is £1,000 a month. in some Nordic countries it is £10 a day. We need to allow people to go to work. Nimco And we need to see a feminist foreign policy. Gina Womanise the world – and I don’t just mean run the world, I’m talking womanizing. Instead of telling little boys not to cry, say cry if it makes you feel better. It amounts to toxic masculinity, they are not men. Nimco I used to date bankers and Tories because they went to school at seven, they didn’t have love and kindness – I could sympathize with them because they had a weird childhood.

Nimco I worked with Priti Patel on this issue of violence against women and girls. She really cares. Gina Rwanda is the worst politician in the world. There is no justification – morally, economically, from a human rights point of view, there is nothing to defend it. Nimco As an African who sees how immigration fuels human trafficking, I’m not sure it’s the worst policy in the world. Gina I don’t understand why you can’t deal with trafficking at its roots. Nimco You can’t unless you have a functioning government, which doesn’t exist in Ethiopia right now, or South Sudan or Libya. Gina We don’t traffic people in Rwanda? So you get processed there and if you have a legitimate claim, you can’t go back. Nimco I don’t think anyone will be transferred there. Gina So we paid the Rwandan government £120 million but not one person is going there? Nimco Hopefully it will stop the smugglers. Preeti was at the forefront of things that weren’t necessarily her fault, and if she ends up writing her account of things it’s going to be really interesting. She was a very good home secretary. He really cares about this country. Gina I am shocked that you say that because what I see and hear from people in the legal profession coming out against her is that she is very closed minded, unforgiving and doesn’t listen.
