Police said they shot a man after they were called to reports of an armed at large. Firearms experts rushed to the scene where they found the suspect. Scotland Yard said the officers fired their weapons and the man was injured. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Gary Clarke, who has lived on a nearby estate for more than three decades, said: “As soon as I heard the shot I heard a ‘crap’ from my bedroom. “Then four minutes later I heard the ambulance, the police turned up. My daughter went over there and said, “Someone got shot on the bridge.” “She was quite shocked and a bit distraught. He said he immediately heard police sirens, adding that emergency services then began to arrive. “Police were watching a man on the side of the bridge,” he said, adding that he was “clearly injured.” “They took his clothes off,” she said, describing how “several people” worked on the man before he was put on a stretcher. Ms Daly said police “began to circle” a silver car, which was still on the bridge. A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “He was attended to at the scene before being taken to hospital. “No other injuries have been reported. Important cords are in place. Citizens are asked to avoid the area. “While the investigation is in its early stages, this incident is not believed to be terrorism-related or that there is an ongoing threat to the general public.” A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We sent a number of resources including an ambulance crew, advanced paramedic, motorcycle paramedic, doctor in a rapid response car and an incident response officer, and we also sent medics from the London Air Ambulance. “We have taken a man to the scene and taken him as a priority to a major trauma centre.” The Met’s Professional Standards Directorate has been informed of the shooting. The police, IOPC, said: “Today we were alerted by the MPS that a man had suffered a gunshot wound as a result of police shooting during an incident in Greenwich, south London. “We have launched an independent investigation. Our investigators have been sent to the scene and procedures following the incident.”
