Cáceres and Badajoz, the provinces that make up Extremadura, join Salamanca, Ávila, Toledo, Seville, Córdoba, Jaén and Ourense in issuing weather warnings. The temperature is not expected to drop below 39 degrees in Extremadura throughout Monday. Salamanca and Ávila are forecast to see 40C, as is Ourense, in Galicia. Andalusia, Madrid, the Basque Country and Aragon remain under yellow warning for now. Also under this umbrella of yellow warnings are Catilla y Leon, Catalonia, Navarra and La Rioja. Temperatures for much of the country between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius fall under this yellow warning. Catalonia and Valencia are likely to feel the brunt of the storms as the day progresses. The high temperatures are expected to last until the middle of the week. READ MORE: Legoland fire: ‘Major’ fire as thick black smoke billows They said: “It cannot be ruled out that it will end up being a heatwave, especially in the south-west of the peninsula, although it will not be as exceptional as the one in mid-July.” The warnings come just days after Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, called on workers to ditch their ties in a bid to save energy in the heat. Mr. Sanchez told a news conference that by losing ties, workers would be less dependent on expensive air conditioning units. He said: “This means we can all save energy.” The country has also been hit by a wave of devastating fires in some parts of Spain in recent weeks.
