Naturalist Olivia Esqueda boarding, trying to describe what everyone sees, recorded on camera for the first time. “The humpback whale was somehow running behind them,” Esqueda said. A five-year-old humpback whale, known as the Valiant, swims behind and around killer whales. Esqueda said they could not believe what they saw next. “We all suddenly saw the next surface with the hump right in the middle of all the killer whales.” They watch for twenty minutes, shocked as Valiant confronts the killer whales who alternatively chase and harass them. This is not a new behavior for Valiant, according to those familiar with the humpback, taking over the ocean’s top predators. Prince of Whales Governor Mark Malleson says there is a reason this particular whale is so daring. “It is obvious when he was a calf, when he was in his first year he had a close call. Because you can see in this picture here, the marks from the rake, the marks of the killer whale rake.
