The Black Dog video on Commercial Drive announced last week that it would close in late June. The store’s owner, Darren Gay, posted on the Internet that business at the store has been in decline for years, and amid rising rents and other costs, keeping the business open is no longer possible. “It’s been a long time coming, but finally it’s time to tear this bandage and pull the trigger to put it this way,” Gay wrote. “We lost the war on what I call the ‘ease of mediocrity’ that streaming et al.” Kelowna lost its last video rental store in the spring of 2020, when Leo’s Videos closed permanently.
