In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid cited the comments of UN Human Rights Council member of inquiry Milun Kothari in an interview. “We’re very disappointed with social media that’s heavily controlled by, whether it’s the Jewish lobby or certain NGOs, a lot of money is thrown into trying to discredit us,” Kothari said on a July 25 Mondoweiss podcast. Israel boycotted the investigation and denied entry to its investigators. He said the commission’s interim finding in June was the latest in a series of biased reports. “The fight against anti-Semitism cannot be done with words alone, it requires action. This is the time for action; it is time to dismantle the Commission,” Lapid said. “This Commission doesn’t just support anti-Semitism – it fuels it.” UN representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. However, Mondoweiss published a letter from committee head Navi Pillay, in which she said Kothari’s comments were deliberately taken out of context. The United States and other Western countries, including Germany, Britain and Austria, have also condemned Kothari’s remarks as anti-Semitic. “These unacceptable remarks unfortunately exacerbate our deep concerns about the unlimited nature and overly broad scope of the COI and the HRC’s disproportionate and biased treatment of Israel,” US envoy to the council Michele Taylor tweeted. While triggered by the Gaza conflict of 11 May 2021, the inquiry mandate includes alleged human rights violations before and after and seeks to investigate the root causes of the tensions. At least 250 Palestinians and 13 people in Israel have been killed in the fierce fighting, which has seen Gaza militants fire rockets at Israeli towns and Israel carry out airstrikes across the coastal enclave.
