David Rout/Getty Images A Sacramento man who tried to save two rafters was found dead along the American River, the Sacramento Bee reported. The report states that 30-year-old Joshua Brandon Crane went missing on Friday, July 26 after jumping into the American River to save two struggling rafters. Although the two eventually made it to safety, it wasn’t until Saturday that Crane’s body was recovered downstream from the San Juan Rapids – a popular recreation area in Fair Oaks, California. Bee says Crane was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
It is unknown if the two rafters were wearing life jackets. Crane’s official cause of death is still being determined. The Sacramento County Regional Parks website says even strong, skilled swimmers should wear life jackets while visiting local rivers, lakes and waterways. It is recommended that people wear them while boating, swimming or even just walking. If someone is in danger, it is recommended that they call for help while another person approaches them with a tree branch, boat oar or pole. Bystanders can also throw a life jacket or ice chest at the distressed person to keep them alive while help arrives. There are currently eight lifeguard stations on the American River Parkway that lend life jackets to both children and adults.
