Protesters from Green New Deal Rising chanted “shame on you” and “Green New Deal” as they stood holding placards inside the protest site. “I think we have some intruders, and I will wait until they are driven out,” said Mrs. Truss, pausing her speech. Tory members in the audience could be heard shouting “out, out, out!” Politics Hub: Liz Truss acknowledges ‘tough winter’ and Sunak comes under fire After removing five security personnel, he continued: “I can say a few words about the militants who are trying to disrupt our country and who are trying to disrupt our democratic process and trying to disrupt our basic services. “I would legislate immediately to make sure we stand up to militant unions that prevent ordinary commuters from getting to work. And I would legislate to protect our essential services.” The Foreign Secretary added: “And I will make sure that militant activists like Extinction Rebellion are not able to upset ordinary people who work hard and do the right thing and go to work. “I will never, ever allow our democracy to be disrupted by unjust protests.” Ms Truss was later at the protests which were interrupted a second time by a protester. “I can say I take it as a compliment to be so popular with Extinction Rebellion,” quipped the Foreign Secretary. Green New Deal Rising describes itself as a movement of 16-35 year olds agitating politicians to protest the climate and economic crisis and demand a Green New Deal – a 10-year plan to create millions of good green jobs and restructuring of the economy. Speaking to Sky News, one of the protesters who were ejected, Fatima Ibrahim, said those in the room were “angry”. “We are angry young people who have watched these breaches and are fed up with candidates who avoid the real crisis and the only answer they give is tax breaks for their rich cronies and the likes of BP and Shell, while telling the rest of us to tighten our belts,” he said. “As a movement we will challenge whoever becomes prime minister.” He added that Ms Truss has “no credible plan” to deal with the energy crisis. A press release published by Green New Deal said the five activists stood up and interrupted Ms Truss during her opening remarks to protest the rising cost of energy bills and the climate crisis. The group said they are acting in a week where energy companies BP, Shell and Centrica have announced record profits and when UK household energy bills are soaring.
