One of the men on the boat was able to call a relative from his cell phone before the boat was swept away by the tide and wind, according to the SFD. The first correspondents were late in finding the exact location of the boat due to conflicting reports about the last known location of the boat, the announcement said.
Firefighters were eventually able to use cellular surveillance software to determine the last known location of one of the people who made the call from the boat, the statement said.
When rescue crews arrived at the site of the last ping mobile phone, they found debris in the water, which they believed was from the boat. Amid 3 to 4 foot swelling, rescuers found the four men and transported them back to shore, the SFD said.
All four were taken to local hospitals, where one was pronounced dead after “long rescue efforts”, the statement said. Another died later in the day and the other two remain in critical condition, the SFD said in a post on social media on Sunday afternoon.
Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Police are investigating the incident, according to the SFD.
