The southbound highway was completely closed to allow for recovery work, with the collision occurring between junction 24 for Ashton at Makerfield and junction 23 for Haydock. North West Highway police attended and said there was “a lucky driver with minor injuries”.
Urgent repairs had to be made to the roadway and the safety barrier, which caused serious delays for drivers. The freeway finally reopened around 4.40pm.

A spokesman for the Inrix traffic monitoring website wrote: “The M6 Southbound has reopened, traffic has returned to normal, the emergency dam and road repairs have been completed and a J26 M58 (Orrell Interchange) truck overturned earlier on the J23 A580 Road East “Haydock). The road reopened at 16:40.”
