Officials said police responded to a scene in the southeast Radisson Heights community around 10 p.m.
When officers arrived in the 1500 block of 35th Street SE, they found a man in possession of several weapons who was acting erratically.
A confrontation ensued and officials say one of the responding officers fired his weapon and struck the person.
“The man was immediately treated by officers and EMS at the scene and has since been transported to the hospital in critical but stable condition,” police said in a statement.
No police officers were injured during the incident.
Jason Hollyoake is a long-time resident of the area and says he was startled by loud gunshots.
“We were all sitting in the corner on our balcony and I heard three distinct ‘pops,’ so I immediately picked up my phone and called 911,” she said.
“It doesn’t shock me, I don’t feel like I need to leave or anything, but things like that keep you extra careful, controlling my surroundings, everything everyone around here has to do.”
Others who lived nearby, like Abhishek Sharma, were caught completely off guard.
“We were so scared, we live in a family environment and when I see the police with a rifle outside my door, it makes me feel like I have to look left or right to see if everything is OK.”
“I was just wondering what happened? What did I just see? I don’t know the full situation, but this is so scary to me.”
Shiela Stevenson also heard the gunshots and immediately became concerned for the safety of her young children.
“I was freaking out,” she said.
“I was just putting my little ones to bed when we heard the ‘pop’ sounds and we all got down and ran to the back of the house as fast as we could.”
