Darren Hayham, 53, once complained to his local newspaper that he was furious that his housing association did not tell him that his neighbor was a sex offender. But now she is behind bars for subjecting a child to a series of brutal sexual abuse from the age of seven to 11. The abuse ranged from kissing and touching the child to forcing him to have sex on more than one occasion. His illness came to light when he was spotted with the victim, prosecutor David Watson told the Liverpool Crown Court. The victim later told her mom that she had been sexually abused by Higham for “centuries”. The boy told police how Higham, a self-employed musician, kissed her and put his penis on her and recalled in one case how he had touched her. He also told them how he asked her not to tell anyone about the abuse, as that would mean they would send him to jail. The injured girl said she sometimes pretended to be tired and fell asleep in the hope that Hayham’s abuse would stop. When police approached Higham from Chaffinch Close, Birchwood, about the alleged offenses, he injured himself and was hospitalized, insisting he had no sexual interest in the children. But he later confessed to the abuse, saying “something triggered” inside him. Defendant Gary Lawrenson said that before these offenses, Higham was a man of good character. He told the court that Haheim had shown genuine remorse and was willing to take part in any work with the surveillance services. Lawrence said: “He does not seek to minimize his actions in any way, shape or form.” Hayham wrote a letter to the court that read: “There are no words to say how much destruction and remorse I feel. I stand before you accepting any punishment you deem appropriate. ” He was sentenced to four years in prison, issued a decree to prevent sexual assault for 10 years and given a restraining order. Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Officer Chris Ormey of the Cheshire Police said: “I hope the sentence will close the victim a little. This young man showed great courage coming forward to report what had happened. “This ultimately meant that Darren Heiham could be brought to justice, where he pleaded guilty to these heinous crimes.” In 1999, Hayham told his local newspaper that he would never have moved into the house where he lived if he had known about his neighbor’s predatory past and demanded that he be relocated.
