The 29-year-old woman, surnamed Wu, began luring men into fake marriage contracts in 2017, reportedly dating 18 men at once, Shanghai TV reported. Wu allegedly lured men into a fake relationship, convincing them that her feelings were genuine and that she was in love. She took pre-wedding photos with the men, who often referred to her as ‘husband’. Once Wu had captured the men, the 29-year-old allegedly demanded money, explaining that she needed it to help several family members. Some of her explanations included that her father has cancer, her cousin needed to be released from prison, and that her brother needed money to buy a house after the wedding. Wu’s friends became suspicious of her and threatened to report her to the police. She would then ask her younger friends for money to pay off the old ones. Earlier this year, Wu’s elaborate plan began to unravel when she asked one of her friends, surnamed Wang, to pose as her brother. She explained that she was trying to get rid of another man, surnamed Lee, who claimed to have tracked her down for unpaid taxes. Following his suspicions, in June Wang demanded a meeting between his parents and Wu, threatening to break up with her and take back his money if she refused. Wang reported Wu to the police after she said she was unable to repay the money at the time. “The man asked me when we could pay him back. He said he was short of money and had already sold his house,” Wang told police, according to the South China Morning Post. “I immediately suspected Wu. Shanghai police discovered Wu living in a rented house with her husband where she claimed to be working as a fashion model. During the investigation, Wu stated that she was single and was dating men to finance her expensive lifestyle. She added that the money was going to her siblings and parents, who live outside Shanghai. Police are currently investigating the situation.
