It got so big because there were 29 straight no-wins, a stretch that stretches back to April 15 when a Tennessee player matched all six numbers in the game. The $1.28 billion prize is for players who are paid with the annuity option, which makes 30 annual payments spread over 29 years. Almost all jackpot winners choose the cash option, which for Friday night’s drawing is estimated at $747.2 million. The jackpot has now been reset to $20 million for Tuesday’s drawing. The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are a staggering 1 in 302.5 million. Tickets with five numbers but missing the Mega number are worth either $1 million or a multiple of $1 million. The US record jackpot is $1.586 billion for a January 2016 Powerball drawing. Mega Millions is played in 45 states as well as Washington, DC and the US Virgin Islands.
