A city councilor of St. John says more resources should be allocated to city center clean-ups after major events. Public Works Board chief Sandy Hickman was speaking on VOCM OpenLine with Paddy Daly about the clean-up after the Regatta compared to the George Street Festival. Hickman praised workers and vendors for the cleanup at Quidi Vidi Lake, but also referred to the large amount of trash left behind after the George Street Festival. He says the city has a contracted company that starts cleaning at 4:00 am. and marches hard into the center of the city. He calls it a resource issue. He says the city needs to do better by putting more resources into cleanup, something he’s committed to fighting for. He says the company is doing its best, but it’s too much for the number of employees they have. He says the city has received complaints.
