Officials said Monday that it would be difficult to meet a start-up window in early to mid-June. The next opportunity to send an empty capsule to the moon on a test flight would be in late June or July. The 30-story Space Launch System rocket was on the pillow at the Kennedy Space Center last month. He will return to the hangar next week for valve and fuel leak repairs. Problems erupted earlier this month, preventing NASA from filling rocket fuel tanks for a critical general rehearsal. The rocket will likely spend weeks in the hangar before returning to the cushion for a test run, said launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson. Managers are considering various options to get back on track. “It’s just a matter of time, what’s the right way to do it,” said Tom Whitmeyer, NASA’s deputy associate. NASA wants this test flight under its belt before boarding astronauts for the second launch, a lunar flight aimed at 2024. The third mission will attempt to land astronauts on the Moon around 2025, more than half a century after its lunar landings NASA from Apollo.
