The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Monday released a stunning image of a crater on Mars, which has caused awe of Internet users. “The Mars crater marks the point,” the space agency wrote in the caption of the image on Instagram. NASA captured the image using the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) at the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. In the post on social media, he informed his followers that they are looking at a longitude of 0 ° on Mars, which is the equivalent of the Greenwich Observatory on the Red Planet. “The map is displayed here at a scale of 50 centimeters (19.7 inches) per pixel,” NASA wrote in the caption. Take a look at the image below: Since its release, the post has garnered more than 449,000 likes. Several Instagram users expressed their awe in the comments section. “It looks like an alien footprint on Mars,” one user wrote. “All of God’s creation includes beauty, and the universe is no exception,” said another. “Something impressive that leaves you speechless !!!” a third was added. It is worth mentioning that the Greenwich Observatory on Earth is located at the top of a steep hill in London, United Kingdom. It marks the First Earth Meridian, which is a north-south line that defines the point where the east meets the west and is used as the zero reference line for astronomical observations. Returning to the enchanting image of Mars in the caption, NASA has revealed that a larger crater is located inside a second rocky basin, called the “Air Crater”. He explained that the Airy Crater originally set zero for the Red Planet, however, as scientists began to capture more detailed images of the planet’s surface, they needed a more accurate indicator. Therefore, the space agency designated the smallest crater – named Airy-0 (zero) – as the First Meridian so as not to alter existing maps.
