The Oklahoma Sooners had their football staff in turmoil Sunday with the 2022 season opener against UTEP just days away. Sooners assistant coach Cale Gundy resigned after using offensive language during a film last week. The 50-year-old coach made the decision with his statement on social media, followed by a statement from the school. He has been in the program since 1999. He said in the statement that he read a word from a player’s iPad that he should never have uttered. I noticed that one player got distracted and picked up his iPad and I read aloud the words that were written on his screen. The words that appeared had nothing to do with football,” he said. “A certain word that I should never – under the circumstances – say appeared on the screen. At this point, I didn’t even realize what I was reading and, once I did, I was horrified. “I want to be very clear: the words I read aloud from that screen were not my words. What I said wasn’t malicious, it wasn’t even intentional. However, I am mature enough to know that the word I said was embarrassing and hurtful.” ALABAMA’S NICK SABAN CALLS 2021 SEASON A ‘REBUILDING YEAR’ Oklahoma Sooners assistant coach Cale Gundy watches the team before their spring game at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on April 23, 2022 in Norman, Oklahoma. Oklahoma coach Brent Venables, who is in his first season as the Sooners’ head coach, said those associated with the program are “all responsible for our actions and the results that result.” “It is with regret that I accept the resignation of Coach Gundy,” Venables said. “He has dedicated more than half his life to Oklahoma football and has served our program and university well. We are grateful for that commitment.” Gundy is the brother of Mike Gundy, who coaches Oklahoma State. He was on the Sooners’ staff for all 14 conference titles and the 2000 national championship season under Bob Stoops. He spent the last seven seasons coaching wide receivers after spending the previous 16 seasons coaching running backs. He was among the owners when Venables took over in December 2021.
