Olivia’s husband, John Easterling, says she died peacefully at her Southern California ranch Monday morning, surrounded by family and friends. Olivia had battled breast cancer for more than 30 years, no specific cause of death has been released, though a source close to Olivia told TMZ, “After a 30-year cancer journey, she lost her battle with metastatic cancer breast”. Olivia hit it big in 1971 with songs like “If Not for You” and in 1973 “Let Me Be There”. He followed it up with a smash hit, “Have You Never Been Mellow”. Her big break came in 1978 when she starred opposite John Travolta in ‘Grease’. Her role as Sandy was iconic, as were several songs from the film, “You’re the One that I Want”, “Summer Nights” and “Hopelessly Devoted to You”. The film propelled Olivia to new heights and she followed it up with films like ‘Xanadu’. Olivia’s biggest hit was “Physical” in 1981, which stayed at #1 for 10 weeks, breaking all records in the 80s. She remained an environmental and animal rights activist throughout her career. Olivia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 but went into remission and came back in 2013. She went back into remission but came back in 2017. A statement from her husband posted on her Instagram said she died peacefully Monday morning at her ranch in Southern California. “Olivia has been a symbol of triumph and hope for more than 30 years, sharing her journey with breast cancer,” wrote her husband, John Easterling. “Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with herbal medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to herbal medicine and cancer research.” In addition to being a veteran actor and musician, Newton-John spent most of the latter half of her career as an advocate for cancer patients and survivors. Thirty years after her first breast cancer diagnosis in 1992, Newton-John still maintains a positive vibe about dealing with cancer. “A lot of people see it as a race, and wherever you choose to see it, that’s your prerogative,” he said. “I see it as part of my mission.” Reacting on Instagram to the news of her death, Grease Actor John Travolta said Newtown-John had a profound effect on him. “My dear Olivia, you have made all of our lives so much better. Your impact has been incredible. I love you so much,” Travolta wrote. “We’ll see you on the road and we’ll all be together again.” Newton-John was born in Cambridge, England in 1948 to parents Brinley and Irene Helene Newton-John. The youngest of three children, she was the granddaughter of Nobel laureate physicist Max Born. Newton-John spent most of her schooling in Melbourne, Australia, where her family moved when she was 6 years old.
