Five orcas were spotted swimming in Comox Marina on Sunday, according to Nicky Smiley, who heads the Comox Valley Wildlife Sightings (CVWS) team with her daughter, Ella. Smiley says the couple is up to date with the orca sightings up and down East Vancouver Island. They were thrilled to see the orcas enter Comox Bay around 7:39 a.m. before making their way to the Royston shipwrecks and finally to the marina. “They spawned and then surfaced right on the dock next to the moored boats,” Smiley said Monday. He says CVWS always tries to keep team members informed of where and when to see orcas from land. The team also works to identify any orca they see and share information with researchers. Smiley says the five orcas he saw on Sunday included T049A1 – nicknamed Noah – T049B’s aunt and cousins T049B2, T049B3 and T049B4. The wildlife lover says that Noah was seen diving at the docks of the French Creek Marina, near Parksville, BC. He adds that much of the coast between the two communities is a “seal haul”, meaning an area where animals gather and leave water, “so [it’s] rather an easy dinner “.
